Oreck often refers to “free tune-ups” included with a vacuum cleaner. In this article we take a closer look at what a tune-up is, and what benefits it can give.
With most Oreck vacuum cleaners, you get a free yearly tune-up for a period that varies with the model. Every year that your vacuum qualifies for a free tune-up, you can bring it to your local Oreck store to have a number of routine maintenance operations performed for free. There are more than 400 Oreck stores nation-wide. If you live far from an Oreck store you can send your vacuum by mail to one of Oreck’s regional service centers. When the tune-up is complete, your vacuum is sent back to you free of charge.
The following operations are included in a standard tune-up:
- Replace the inner dust bag – Some models have an extra inner bag that traps odor and increases suction. It contains activated carbon that must be replaced regularly for full effect.
- Clean the outer bag – In case dust escapes from the inner bag, it is caught by the outer bag and stays there. This dirt, dust, pet dander etc. must be removed to keep the pores of the bag breathing.
- Replace the HEPA filters – Some models have built-in high-filtration HEPA filters that need to be replaced yearly.
- Replace the seals – The bag seals keep the dust inside the vacuum. If one of the seals break, dust may escape back into the room or even damage the motor.
- Clean the roller brush – Hair, string and lint accumulates on the roller brush when you use the vacuum cleaner. Cleaning the brush enables it to work more efficiently.
- Clean the roller brush bearings – Cleaning the brush bearings enables them to move freely and lets the brush rotate at maximum speed.
- Replace the roller brush belt – The brush belt drives the rotating brush inside the powerhead. This belt can become dirty or even break if it becomes worn. Replacing the brush belt every year ensures that the brush is rotating at optimum speed.
- Polish the armature – This increases the speed of the motor to get better agitation and airflow.
- Check all electrical connections – This is a safety measure that also detects and fixes loose connections.
- Clean and sanitize the interior and exterior – Dust and dirt accumulates on both the inside and outside of a vacuum cleaner. Removing it ensures uninterrupted operation and keeps the vacuum cleaner looking good.
